5 moves the Falcons should make this offseason
The Atlanta Falcons are currently projected $4.6 million over the cap for 2022. Only seven teams have less cap room then the Falcons, but we are in a much better position then last offseason. Here are five moves I think Arthur Smith and Terry Fontenout should make.
Keep
Calvin Ridley: Obviously this depends on whether Ridley wants to stay or not, but the Falcons need to keep try and keep him. The teams left in the playoffs are littered with talent at wide receiver. Ridley has the ability to rival almost any other receiver in the league. Matt Ryan desperately missed the former Alabama wideout in 2021. He is a stud when he is on the field. Ridley ranked 5th in the NFL in the 2020 season with 1374 receiving yards and 9 receiving touchdowns.
Trade
Grady Jarrett: Jarrett has been an incredible defensive lineman for the Atlanta Falcons, but he is approaching a window where he'll need a new contract. The Falcons have limited cap space. Trading Jarrett would create $9.2 million in cap room. Jarrett is an elite lineman, so there would be plenty of interest in him from teams with Superbowl aspirations.
Deion Jones: I'd drive Deion Jones to Atlanta Airport myself, if it meant getting him off the books. A post June 1st trade would net the Falcons an additional $9.4 million. Our former head coach Dan Quinn loves Deion Jones, so if he gets a head coaching job which is very likely, that team would be a potential trade destination. I would take a conditional 7th just to be rid of Debo's half arsed play and brutal contract.
Restructure
Jake Matthews: Restructuring left tackle Jake Matthews would give Terry Fontenout an extra $5.69 million in cap room to work with. Matthews has been Mr.Dependable since being drafted back in 2014. A star left tackle is essential for any NFL team and we luckily have one in Matthews. He has the second longest active streak of consecutive games played in the NFL, trailing only Ndamukong Suh.
Re-Sign
Cordarelle Patterson: Patterson was the best offseason acquisition by Terry Fontenout last summer. He led the Falcons in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and receiving touchdowns. Atlantas production should improve in year two of Arthur Smiths offense. Bringing Patterson back and teaming him up with Pitts, Ridley and Gage together; in addition to better offensive line play should ensure this.
